Types of Career Advising Appointments

Meet the CCD: Introduction to What We Offer

30-Minute Appointment. This appointment type is appropriate for students and alumni looking to meet the CCD and learn about our available services. We encourage you to review the CCD website and the 12twenty Resource Library before your appointment to learn more about our resources.

Resume or CV Review

30-Minute Appointment. A resume or curriculum vitae (CV) is an essential part of the job search process, as it serves as the primary way employers evaluate your professional qualifications. For in-person appointments, bring a printed copy of the documents you'd like to review. To maximize the effectiveness of your appointment, please review the relevant CCD Resume/CV Guide in the 12twenty Resource Library and update your document to reflect the suggestions in the Guide.

Professional Correspondence Review (Cover Letter, Email, LinkedIn Profile)

30-Minute Appointment. The CCD can help you strengthen your professional documents, such as your cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and networking outreach messages. To maximize the effectiveness of your appointment, please review the relevant CCD resources in the 12twenty Resource Library and update your materials accordingly.

Mock Interview

50-Minute Appointment. Mock interviews are practical exercises to help develop and refine your interviewing skills. Your career advisor will spend 30-40 minutes reviewing behavioral interview questions tailored to the position, graduate school, or program to which you are applying, and will end with feedback on improving your interview performance. To maximize the effectiveness of your mock interview, please review the relevant interview preparation resources in the 12twenty Resource Library.

Major and Career Path Exploration

50-Minute Appointment. You and your career advisor will explore various careers, majors, minors, and career-related activities to help guide you through the exploration process. Before your appointment, you are encouraged to explore the "What Can I Do With This Major" resource and complete the "Focus 2" assessment available in the Major/Career Path Exploration Resources folder in the 12twenty Resource Library.

Internship Exploration

50-Minute Appointment. Internships are increasingly critical to the career development of undergraduate and graduate students. Securing an internship during your time at Rice is an excellent way to gain experience while exposing yourself to the world of work. Before your appointment, you are encouraged to view the Internship/Job Search Resources in the 12twenty Resource Library.

Employment Exploration

50-Minute Appointment. CCD Career Advisors can help you understand your employment needs and interests, as well as work with you to develop a job search strategy. Employment Exploration is a process and may require one or several appointments during your time here at Rice, depending on where you are in the exploration process. Before your appointment, you are encouraged to view the Internship/Job Search Resources in the 12twenty Resource Library.

Graduate School Exploration

50-Minute Appointment. CCD Career Advisors can help you understand if graduate school is the right next step for you and your career goals. Once you've decided to move forward with graduate school, we can help you navigate the application process and connect you with additional resources at Rice for graduate school application support.

Free Professional Attire Referral

30-Minute Appointment. The CCD partners with two community organizations, Career Gear Houston and Dress for Success Houston, to assist students who may have barriers in obtaining professional business attire. A referral appointment with the CCD is required to participate in either program. During this appointment, your advisor will review the process and procedures to obtain attire from each organization. We recommend scheduling a professional attire referral appointment a few weeks before your professional event. Please email the CCD if you have an immediate need for professional attire; we may be able to support you through the CCD Career Closet.

Offer Discussion or Salary Negotiation Support

30-Minute Appointment. If you have received a job or internship offer, you may want to discuss the specifics with a career advisor before you sign. Your advisor can also discuss strategies to negotiate your salary, start date, or other terms of your offer. We encourage you to explore the Salary Database in 12twenty Research Tools to explore Rice-specific outcomes data and generate comparable offer data.

Career Assessment Overview and Interpretation

30- or 50-Minute Appointments. Assessments are tools that can be used if you’re unsure of what to major in, need clarification on possible postgraduate plans, or want to gain an understanding of what a good fit is for you. During this appointment, we will discuss the purpose of the assessments, and the counselor will help you determine whether proceeding with an assessment is the appropriate next step in your career development process. There is a fee for the assessments, which can be waived for students in financial need (please discuss with your career advisor at the Assessment Initial Overview appointment).

  • The MBTI Career Report for undergraduates and early-career graduate students is offered for $15.
  • The MBTI Interpretive Report for Organizations for later-career graduate students, postdocs, and alumni for $35.
  • The Strong Interest Inventory is offered for $10.

The Focus 2 assessment is available to Rice students at no cost in the Major/Career Exploration Resources folder of the 12twenty Resource Library. While interpretation of your Focus 2 results is not required, you are welcome to schedule a Major and Career Path Exploration appointment to discuss your Focus 2 results.

Drop-In Hours

You may need another quick scan of your resume or want to practice your elevator pitch before the Career Expo; we can help with that! To schedule your drop-in, log in to 12twenty, visit the Appointments tab, and follow the link at the top of the scheduling page.
