Final Fridays

The CCD Final Fridays are special sessions held around the last Friday of each month. Topics are specific to the graduate student job search as well as professional communication (CVs, resumes, and interviewing).

January 29, 2016: How to Approach the Expo as a Graduate Student

In this Final Friday Session, we will discuss ways to make a lasting impression with employers at the Spring Career & Internship Expo.  We will also share tips to help you sell your skills, education, and experience to employers who may be focusing on hiring undergraduates.  Finally, we will discuss ways to prioritize your targeted employers and the organizational research that comes along with those targets.  Open to all non-MBA graduate students and Post-docs.  Pizza will be served, so please RSVP in RICElink.

February 26, 2016:  The Power of Networking

In this session, we will hopefully change your mindset about networking.  Many students (and professionals) think that networking is scary, pointless, a waste of time, or something for only "business types."  However, recent studies have shown that almost 80% of jobs are found through networking.  This session will assist you in developing networking strategies that will best suit your personality and strengths.

Our special guest facilitator for this Final Friday topic will be Tracy Volz, Director of the Program in Writing and Communication & Professor in the Practice at Rice University.  Volz has nearly two decades of experience teaching communication at Rice University.  In addition to working with Rice University faculty and students, Volz has taught communication seminars to engineers, physicians, teachers, and business professionals.  Additional, Volz is a Rice graduate alumnus, having earner her PhD in English.

Open to all non-MBA graduate students and Post-docs.  Pizza will be served, so please RSVP in RICElink.

March 25, 2016: Professionalism & Career Management

In this session, we will discuss how to best carry yourself in your new role and what will be expected of you in terms of professional behavior.  We will also discuss creating SMART career goals as you venture out beyond the hedges.  Open to all non-MBA graduate students and post-docs.  Pizza will be served, so please RSVP in RICElink.
